A bit of sewing for Holly....

Holly is my Zwergnase Junior Wentje who came here at Christmastime, a present from my  husband Brian.  Until now the poor girl has stood for ages in her default outfit then she was changed into a 'hand me down' from one of my other dolls, but today, finally, she has an outfit of her own.

I wanted to make her some loose fitting linen overalls and so searched on line for photos of what I had in mind.  So firstly I made a pattern by taking her measurements and drawing it out on a large piece of brown paper.  She's 55cm tall so the usual A4 sheets wouldn't work for her.  I tweaked it a few times and then decided to use an old pair of trousers of mine to cut up for the fabric.  I don't have much linen type fabric here and all that I do have would have been too small.  Plus I didn't really want to use good fabric in case the pattern was not a good fit for her.

I'm really pleased with how they've turned out.  I used some red metal overall clips that are meant for human sized items, and they worked perfectly for her.  I made a simple cap sleeved white tee shirt to finish off the look.

The overalls have large pockets on the sides so that Holly can fill them with her belongings or of course she can fit her hands in them too.

I have tweaked my pattern slightly to make them a little less full under the arms, and next time I think I will make them with short legs for the summer.

I hope you're all keeping safe and having a nice day.

Big hugs, Sharon xxx

  1. This looks adorable! I love everything about this outfit: the fabric combination, the hat, the braids and the little stuffed animal inside her pocket. And you managed to take all this beautiful pictures outside. I really need to learn to sew, at least the very basics, to expand my dolls' wardrobe.

I hope you're doing well and staying safe. Big hugs.

    1. Thank you MC, I'm glad you like it. Yes with the lockdown I'm soooo confident at taking her outside in the garden behind us to photograph! Because there is absolutely no-one to see me :) I spent a bit more time and actually didn't skulk about trying to hide...a real first for me.
I learned to sew when I came to live here in Spain back in 2004, I never ever had an inclination to sew before then despite my mum being a sewer and always trying to encourage me. Now I love sewing so I do highly recommend it, it's such a sense of achievement when you sew something for your dolls yourself.
Big hugs to you too, and of course you must stay safe and well too.

  2. Such cute overalls! I love the pattern contrast - the red accents make the whole outfit so lively :). Holly looks a bit more cheerful now ;).
    Stay safe!

  4. Hi Sharon! When I look at Holly I am reminded of how beautiful and full of character the Zwergnase Junior dolls are. You've done a lovely job of her outfit, I love the blue/white combo with that touch of red. You really have a wonderful knack of dressing little girls that photograph so well. :)
    Big hugs,

  5. I love how you have styled Holly. The blue and white with that touch of red to add a bit of a zing, is just perfect. You have such great style, Brendan must have been the coolest boy in school!
I also love how you have styled Holly's hair taking down her plaits, I looks at Holly (Wentje) around the same time as you but decided against because she was one of the bigger girls but you have made her appeal to me again! lol xx

    1. Thanks very much Dee :) LOL I'm not sure Brendan would agree with you though, he often reminds me of some of the outfits he had as a small child, I thought they were dead cute but he didn't always share my opinion!!!

  7. What a cute outfit. I love those colors with her hair.

I like the pockets, even dolls need to store important things like stuffed animals.

    1. Thank you Dorothy! I'm glad you think so. I used to think that it was probably harder to dress a redhead because of colours 'clashing' but it's not been my experience with her.
