New project...New shoes!

Today I thought I'd take a little break from sewing and decided to make a pair of shoes.  The shoes I chose to make are for the 18 inch play dolls but I am thinking about adapting the pattern to make them in Sasha size, or maybe even Toddler size, although I might have to forgo some of the details as it might be too difficult to sew them in that small size.

I chose to make them in leather rather than the vinyl suggested in the pattern, but I think maybe vinyl would have been a lot easier to use.  For example the white leather parts are approx 2mm thick leather and that, along with the thinner brown leather of the body of the shoes, plus I lined the brown leather with stabiliser, my machine wasn't over keen on so many layers to sew through.

However, they are finished and although not perfect, I'm really pleased with how they came out!  Now to make some small laces for them :)  And of course some turquoise and white striped socks! :)

    They are great Sharon! and all Leather ! fab. They are so well finished, I have seen some shoes with bad finishing and the only reason someone must have bought any was out of pity!! dire!
    I found a pattern for some Sasha shoes the other day, I was thinking of having a go...... lol that's along with all the other things I plan to do that never get done... comes of having to work to pay for my Doll habit!! :)xxx

      Thanks very much Dee, yes all leather except for the sole which is cork and foam. I enjoyed the challenge but would make it easier on myself next time!
      Ooooh where did you find your Sasha shoe pattern? I have one or two but they're very simple plain styles and I fancy doing something more detailed...yes I am a glutton for punishment obviously!!!

      It's a very plain pattern I got from the Sasha festival in 2012, I'll get Paul to scan it and I'll send a copy to you tomorrow. If I don't remind me!!!

    Those look fantastic! I really admire the work that goes into making doll shoes - it always looks like so much more of a challenge than just sewing clothes. And working with leather must have made it that much more of a challenge as well - brilliant work!

      Thanks so much JS, I'm glad you liked them. They are fiddly to make but I'm pleased with how they came out and now I have a lot of ideas for different ones....all I need now is the time to make them!!

    Wow Sharon, these are amazing! Doll shoe making is a real mystery for me. I love that you made the shoes in leather, they look like real size shoes! I once made shorts out of real leather, and sewed them by hand, because my machine can't handle leather. It was so difficult! I really admire your work here!

    well done !...my machine wouldnt have coped with that at all, it would kind of miss stitches ie. there should be 3 stitches but it would turn out as just one and when your top stitching thats not a good look ...maybe look for some glove leather but some of that stretches so thats more problems,,,ive got lots of very thin book binding leather that ill never use , very thin feels a bit weird but your quite welcome to it if you want , im sure it wont cost much to post , ill have a look what colours ive got and get back to you xxxx

      Thanks very much Sarah, I'm pleased with my sewing machine, I didn't expect it to go through the leather like it did. I'd be delighted with the leather if you don't want it....leather is very hard to find locally and what I bought on line is too thick :(

    Haven't got a Sasha at the moment but PLEASE can I put myself down on the list for some SHOES when you start production...I know the list will be long :) I agree with Dee...some of the Sasha shoes out there are extremely grim!!

    These are really cute Sharon, well done! I'm surprised you managed to sew through those layers of leather at all, what sort of sewing machine were you using? Yes, I can see them with turquoise and white striped socks. :) I shall look forward to seeing them modelled soon.

      Thanks very much Xanadu. I was surprised too but sewed them very slowly just in case, I didn't want to ruin my new sewing machine! It's a Brother Innov-is 955 sewing and embroidery machine, my hubby bought it for me for Christmas and I just LOVE it!!!
