In my last post I wrote about my impulse buy from a doll store here in Spain. The order was for a Daniela with Pink Outfit by the Spanish doll company Llorens who are based in Onil, Valencia, Spain. Well the doll arrived very quickly, the company I bought her from, Dolls and Dolls state on their website that they will ship within 24/48 hours and I ordered her on the 18th April which was a Saturday. The Monday was a public holiday in Valencia where the doll was made and so she shipped on the Tuesday and arrived on the Wednesday. A very quick service.
I apologise in advance for the number of photos but wanted to be thorough 😃
The doll was packed safely in a brown shipper and then inside she was in a very sturdy decorated cardboard box which could be used by a child in a number of ways.
She was held safely in the box by some ties but none of those horrible plastic ones that are often pushed into the dolls head.
Unfortunately I didn't take any photos of the box but hope you'll enjoy this little review of the doll out of the box. (I would have liked to have photographed her with other dolls in this size range but I don't really have anyone to compare her to! But if anyone wants photos of her alongside dolls that I do have, such as Sashas, then please just give me a shout).
Straight out of the box. She is wearing this very cute winter outfit consisting of pink knitted jumper with long sleeves and hood, the hood is edged with beige cream faux fur, a pair of mid calf length knitted leggings, a pink knitted bobble hat and faux suede fur lined 'Ugg' type boots. She doesn't have any underwear or socks.
The yarn used for the jumper and hat is pink but it has a sort of 'tweedy' effect with white and grey flecks. The jumper has pink turn back style cuffs.
She has a very pouty face, the sort of face that really appeals to me.
She stands really well straight out of the box.
Daniela has a very sweet profile, the scult is child-like with a cute nose and pouty lips.
The face painting is soft and natural looking. Her eyelashes are a little on the long side for my liking but they are not too bad. I will probably replace them with slightly smaller darker ones at some point.
Her hair is lovely and well rooted, there don't appear to be any big gaps between the rooting holes. The hair fibre feels very much like the more expensive modern dolls from Gotz in Germany, very silky and soft. The colour in the photo below is not true to life, the real colour is more like my other photos, it's a warm golden blond. The style is good too, it falls nicely into a short bob.
She has cute well sculpted ears.
Her eyes are blue inset acrylic and they are quite detailed. She does not have sleep eyes. Her eyebrows are very sparcely detailed, I may well redo those by filling them in with more 'hairs' using watercolour pencils and chalk pastels. And she doesn't have lower lashes, so I will add those, again with watercolour pencils.
Her lips are very detailed with lip creases and are not overly painted or glossed.
Below you can see the outfit with the hood up.
Daniela has quite a lot of head movement, she can pose with her head looking up, or over her shoulder, she can look down (although her head tends to want to come up again from the looking down position). When her head is turned all the way around to the back, it remains level and does not look upwards as some play dolls do. She certainly has good and natural head movement.
Her feet are quite detailed, with cute little toes and neat nails.
Her hands are also very detailed, with small neat fingernails and lines on the finger joints.
She even has detailed lines on her palms!
Also her hands are not the same, each hand is slightly different! Below you can see how detailed the lines on the fingers are.
When Daniela sits down her legs do splay outwards but not as bad as some dolls do. She can sit up unaided without falling backwards.
Because the weather is warm here I wanted to make her something more summery to wear, so I took her measurements. I compared her measurements with the Heart 4 Hearts dolls, Corelle dolls and the American Doll Wellie Wishers who's details I found online. It turns out that she is almost the same size as the 14.5 inches Wellie Wishers dolls! This was great to see as I do have patterns already in that size. I think the only difference is that Daniela's hips are a couple of centimetres bigger.
I made her this outfit below, in my favourite colours of blue and white, which I think suits her perfectly.
Outfit and socks by me, shoes by the late Jean Jensen (made for Sasha dolls and slightly too big for this dolls feet).
So to sum up, would I recommend this doll? Yes! I definitely would recommend this doll for both children and adult collectors. She is very well made, using high quality and safe materials. Her hair can be combed or brushed and she is sturdy enough that a child could play with her without fear of her falling apart quickly. The company recommend her for children of 3 years and over and I would agree that she would be perfect from that age upwards. Price-wise this doll is excellent value for money; she cost me 37,95 euros plus 6 euros postage within Spain.
I would certainly recommend both the Llorens company doll and the Spanish retailer Doll and Doll for a good dolly shopping experience.
I hope you've enjoyed this review and seeing this new little girl!
Thank you for stopping by, keep safe and well everybody!
Big hugs Sharon in Spain xxx

A new outfit for Becca by Paola Reina...
Whilst I was in the UK I thought I'd have a look at the newly released Sindy who is available at Tesco supermarkets. The famous teenager doll of the 1960s onwards has been reproduced but this time instead of being a small fashion doll, she is now an 18 inch child doll aimed at much younger girls I would think. The doll herself does not appeal to me in the least, she has a flat bland face in my humble opinion but I did buy one of the outfits that are available separately as I thought it was quite cute and might fit one of my other dolls in this size range.
The outfit I bought was called simply "Sindy Winter Outfit" and cost £11.95. It consists of a pink fluffy jumper/tunic with a silver vinyl heart applique, pink and white sort of snowflake patterned stretch knit leggings, a pink puffed sleeveless body warmer with a turquoise lining and collar, this does up with Velcro but has silver snaps on the front, just for show, pink fabric boots that do up the back with Velcro, pink nylon fabric 'mittens' which are actually not shaped in any way, and are edged with the fluffy fabric and a pair of fluffy pink earmuffs! A lot of PINK! Although Velcro wouldn't be my first choice, remember this is an outfit made for young children so would be great for them.
However, the outfit is quite cute and well made and I tried it on my Paola Reina Becca who is approx 17.5 inches tall and is from the Soy Tu range of dolls. The fit is great and I think it looks good on her even though some people would not dress a redhead in pink :)
She decided to wear it to the beach yesterday because although it was bright and sunny, it was a little on the cool side. I hope you'll agree that the outfit does look sweet on her!
(Someone asked me if this outfit would fit Sasha dolls. I've not tried yet but think it would probably work for the later larger dolls, but I will try it soon).
Happy Monday everyone! It's pouring with rain here today.......!

A dolly purchase.....and review!
Today I went to the vet to get dog food and on the way back, erm...I got sidetracked and went into a toy shop that we've previously only passed by in the car! I was a bit naughty and purchased a doll :) It wasn't my fault of course, I blame Farrah Lily, of Cozy Comforts and Dolls
because this morning I was reading an entry on her blog entitled 'July Doll Haul' and I was so envious of how some people are able to physically walk into a shop and buy nice dolls rather than always on the internet.....I wish I'd been into dolls when we used to spend our holidays in US!!! So you see, I'm completely innocent here ;)
The doll in question is from a Spanish company called Antonio Juan and they produce several sizes of all vinyl or vinyl and cloth dolls, including baby dolls who have the cutest faces and belly buttons!! Anyway, I digress, I bought a 45cm tall doll who was marked 'offerta'....always a good label to see on anything you're interested in. She's all vinyl and is a child's play doll. I thought I would do a review of her box opening etc and hope you will enjoy it. There are a lot of photos, so maybe grab a nice cup of tea and a few biscuits, just in case!!!
The Box
The box is very sturdy and rather attractive, with pale pink background and decorated with pink roses and polkadots. The company logo features prominently on the front. As you can see, I had a little helper!!!
This silver sticker is self explanatory.
The back of the box is just as attractive as the front and has all the company's information as well as the warning that the doll is not suitable for children under 36 months 'due to small parts'....Phew, I'm just old enough then ;)
Like most other doll companies that I've come across here in Spain, the Antonio Juan company is located in Onil which is in Alicante. I would love to visit this area but it's quite a way from here....maybe one day I will take the high speed train link and go from there! The company itself was formed in 1958 and has been in the same family for four generations and they pride themselves on their product.
If you go to their website, there is a really good video of the complete process of the dolls being produce, right from the initial sculpting in clay, right through to the completed dolls being put into boxes for shipping out. I was amazed to watch the hair being rooted, the machine operator has to really be on the ball.....it does explain how some of our Sashas and Gregors have some very 'odd' rooting patterns sometimes, because I'm sure the process would have been pretty similar back then too!

To view the video scroll down slightly and it can be found on the right hand side of the page.
One interesting thing of note here, I saw other dolls in the toy shop that had exactly the same face moulds as dolls from another more well known doll company called Paola Reina, so I don't know if they're connected in any way. I'm still trying to find out.
Inside the sturdy cardboard box, once you take off the lid, there is a plastic 'window' which is used to protect the dolls whilst on display in the toyshops...you can see the glare of my flash which decided to go off for some reason! This window is easily removed and can be stored in the lid of the box.
And a close up.
She was very easy to remove from the box as she was only held in with clear elastic bands attached to two separate plastic pieces, one around her neck and the other around one of her ankles. Despite only having the two anchor points, she seemed very securely fastened, I was surprised that there was nothing else keeping her so neatly tied in.
Here is the inside of the box, you can see the two plastic anchor points here.
Close up you can see her knitted beanie hat is attached with one of those tiny plastic ties, which had to be snipped to remove it. Her hair is held in place underneath the hat with a clear polythene band.
My intention when I saw this doll was that I might 'customise' her and usually I would remove the eyes and replace with my favourite glass eyes, but these actually are quite nice eyes, so I shall wait and see if I go the full whack and remove them. I think her eyebrows would do with a bit of filling in as they are quite basically done. I am not overkeen on these eyelashes but if I keep these eyes then these lashes would probably stay too. She has a cute botton nose and nicely sculpted pouty lips!
Although her body is quite 'child-like' with a rounded tummy, I do wonder if it really 'matches' that well with her chubby toddler like face and her chubby hands? She has a more defined 'waist' which small children don't really have. You can see this more clearly in the photo below, showing her back view, she almost has a 'curvy' figure.
She does have very cute hands and feet, they are particularly well sculpted and both hands are slightly different. There is a lot of detail to the nails too.

There were two choices left in the shop, one, a blond with blue eyes, was wearing her first Holy Communion dress and this is the other one, who is dressed for winter. The inside of the box is nice, as you can see it's bright pink with white polkadots. Polkadots are very popular here in Spain and used on a lot of flamenco dresses.
Here she is without the plastic window:
And a close up.

Despite only having the two anchor points, she seemed very securely fastened, I was surprised that there was nothing else keeping her so neatly tied in.

Here she is released from the box......."phew" she says "thank you for letting me out!"
Her clothes are very nice. Her outfit is made up of 7 pieces. She wears the pink knitted beanie, a grey knitted scarf which has knots on each end, a pale pink quilted/padded coat with hood and pompoms instead of buttons. The fabric is really good quality and the hood is lined in white cotton. I was surprised, seeing how nicely made the outfit is, that the seams aren't 'finished' but I guess you can't have everything!
Underneath her coat she wears a sleeveless cotton blouse/angel top in a
small flowery print, and a corderoy skirt that flares out from a 'yoke'
or wide waistband. Again I was surprised to see that their seams weren't finished, but the items seem well made apart from that. They do however do up with velcro which I don't really like but then these dolls are aimed at children who would probably not mind in the least.
Under the skirt she is wearing white knitted tights.
Finally she has a pair of leatherette ankle boots with laces and remind
me very much of the ones Ruth of Ruthsdolls makes for our Sashas. These
ones are in a nice neutral beige.
Now let's look at the doll herself. Firstly, once released from the polythene band keeping it in place, you can see that her hair is lovely and thick, it's very well rooted with a neat centre parting. It's cut into a shaggy bob which I like, as well as the fact that it is not all the same length, it's cut into layers at the back. The hair itself is of very good quality, it feels silky and smooth and has body to it. I was able to comb it through straight away without it getting tangled and flyaway. It's also not a 'solid' unnatural colour, it is deep brown but as the light hits it so you can see slightly lighter shades in there, which makes it more like real hair.
Now on to her body. She has a child-like body with 5 points of articulation, being at her neck, shoulders and hips. Her head will move up and down as well as from side to side, which gives her quite a lot of expressive posing. You can see her looking up in the photo above and looking down in the photo below. Her head appears to be strung with elastic but I don't know if her arms and legs are strung the same way, they seem to be fitted into the body. When she sits her legs go out in a 'triangle', which I'm not overkeen on but then most of my dolls tend to stand up for that very reason.
I had hoped that this doll would fit some of the many American Girl sewing patterns that I have here but having measured her and compared with those dolls, it would seem that she is more on a par with the Kidz n Cats, having a much slimmer torso. I will try out some of the AG patterns on her at some point in the future but for now she'll have to wait!
My overall opinion of this doll is that she is definitely worth the money I paid for her. I paid 45 euros and believe the usual price is 55 euros. So not a big price tag for a doll with such good quality hair and outfit. I think the outfit alone would have cost more than that if I'd bought something similar separately! As I said above, I bought her with the intention of customising her and I might still do a few things to 'personalise' her, but for the moment I think she's really very cute just as she is!!!
I hope you've enjoyed reading about this new little girlie who's joined my dolls here in sunny Spain and I hope there weren't too many photos! ;)
