Fabric sort out!

I spent hours today trying to sort out all my fabric.  I ironed each piece before photographing it, then folding it ready to be put in individual plastic bags.....I'm trying to organise it so that I know where everything is.  I found brand new fabrics that I'd forgotten I even had!  I ended up taking more than 200 photos, which then had to be uploaded to my laptop, then resized, then each had to have the exposure adjusted because they were a bit 'off' due to having been taken indoors with flash.

Just some of the fabric ready to be sorted and put away!  My poor dolls and sewing machine are practically buried under this lot!!!

Anyway, even after all that, I only made the tiniest indent into the fabric, so have the rest to look forward to tomorrow!!!

    1. Oh Julie, isn't it a chore!!! I've spent another few hours on it this afternoon and still I'd say I'm only about 20% done!!!

    1. Yes, it's all Dees fault!!! ;) I am still going, I spent more time on it today and I'll do more tomorrow hopefully. If I stop now then I'll be really cross with myself because it really really needs to be done. My floor in my sewing room is getting dangerous what with all the stuff piled up everywhere! I hope I can eliminate that by sorting the fabric out first!

  3. Oh TREASURE!!!! I love fabric ! I think taking a photo of every piece is just a delaying tactic!!! lol especially if you have to cut and change it!! Just box it and send it here, I'll look and tell you what you have... :)
If it was me I would sort it by colour, then box it all and then if you are feeling a BLUE mood coming on you can look in that box!! Glad to see you have way way way more fabric than me.. makes me feel quite innocent in the fabric buying stakes.. :)
    Good luck tomorrow :
    Hugs Dee

    1. LOL Nice try Dee!! It's all your fault for starting to do some organising...you made me feel bad that I should be doing some too! So here I am....and still a long way to go!
I will be going with the colour organising but I was thinking does anyone organise by themes as well, such as 'animals' or 'whimsical'? I might have to do a spreadsheet and have some cross referencing!! Or is that too OCD?!!!!!

  4. I sorted my fabric after we redecorated our bedroom a couple of years ago and built our bespoke wardrobe, which freed up my chest of drawers for fabric. Each drawer has a different colour range of fabric, though I must admit since then my more recently acquired fabric lives in a basket (neatly folded). I have periodic sort outs to get combinations right for outfits.

    1. I used to have mine in colours but then I started getting a bit lazy and just putting stuff in wherever there was a space!!! So I've really only got myself to blame for this mess!!!!! I will go back to it again tomorrow .....

  6. You're so organised! Admirable!

Mine lays here and there -and sometimes I found it, thinking 'Oh-that could make a skirt...'
but then no time to made and it buries in oblivion again:)

    1. That's exactly what I'm like Anne, I think to myself "oh I'll keep that, it would make x, y, or z"....of course that never happens!!!!

  7. I love this post Sharon, because it makes me feel a whole lot better about my piles of fabric sitting here, there, and just about everywhere (but at least it's still confined to my loft/craft room) - I'm not the only one struggling with this. I started trying to sort it just after I folded up the sofa bed when the family had left after Christmas, then unfolded it so I could sort fat quarters by colour etc. and then I get waylaid with a hundred other jobs, one of which is sorting my yarn stash. Photographing every piece sounds so organised but I'm inclined to agree with Dee on that! Hope it's going better today!!

    1. LOL, I'm glad it made you feel good Jude....it made me feel worn out! ;) But it seems to be pretty common with fabric, where on earth does it all come from???
Well I'm taking the photos because when someone wants to commission me to make something, they always ask what fabric I have, so I thought if I photograph it all now, maybe I'll be more organised and it'll take less time to show the customer the fabric! Knowing my luck, no-one will want to commission me again! Oooops!!

  10. Oh dear! Kendal is blaming Dee for the sort out and I THINK that Dee has resorted to sending Hattie to oversee the whole stash sort experience, or is it Hattie's cousin? She seems to be in the photo and stepping back in amazement at the size of the stash....

    1. Yes, it's all Dee's fault of course!!! ;)
Well that is Ellory, she is definitely a Hattie lookalike but she's a bit less confident than Hattie is! Ellory came to me in December 2012 having previously lived with Ronnie! I saw her on Ebay and just had to have her, she's very sweet! Thankfully Hattie is still working hard on her hats in the UK....I think she'd be a hard task master and I really am up to my neck in this sorting lark as it is, without her coming here to sort me out!!!!
