The flea-market find makeover...

A couple of weeks ago I showed a little Paola Reina doll that I got for 10 euros at the Saturday flea-market in Los Boliches, Fuengirola.  I had given her a wash and she was wearing a sock on her head (and whole body!!) to flatten her hair down.  Well she ended up wearing the sock for days, then when that didn't work she progressed to a hat.  Finally, when I removed the hat after a week....her hair was still sticking up in the air and looking awful.  It was nice and soft at the back but the front was cut exactly to accommodate the headress that she came with.  So I cut the lot off.  I know....incredibly destructive but I was so mad that I couldn't do a thing with it.  And because I'd done that, I thought I might as well remove her spidery eyelashes and her plastic eyes and give her the full works.

She now has a revamped wig, more realistic glass eyes and new eyelashes.   I just noticed that her eyes are a bit wonky though!  I will try to fix that.  The funny thing is, the eye holes have to be softened with heat from the outside and pushed in from the front, they sit in a sort of 'pocket' and are not accessible through the inside of the head!!

Not a great photo, her face is a little bit out of focus!!

She looks like she's got incredibly long arms in this photo!!!  (She hasn't!)

I like this one, she looks young and baby-faced!

Here is a before and after comparison, I should really have taken both photos in similar lighting so that a 'true' comparison could be seen as I've not changed her lips or blush but it appears that way in the 'after' photo:

I was thinking that perhaps I could reroot her back to brunette as her head is quite soft so it might be nice and easy and not take very long.  We shall see!

  1. I'm glad you posted the before and after - I thought it was a different doll I hadn't seen!
I must say I really like the blue eyes, they look so realistic and of course they go with the blond hair. Looking forward to seeing what comes next!

    1. Yes, they're not bad at all, quite good quality. I do prefer the Asian girl I've got though, rather than this one, but she was a bargain so I got her all the same....and didn't feel so bad about changing her!!!

  3. Ironic that you should mention rerooting her back to brunette. As I was looking at her photos, I was thinking to myself how the blonde (and the specific blonde you used) suited her. She looks so young and sweet with her current style and color hair.

    1. I agree with you Julie on this shade of blond....I tried her with several other shades of blond which looked just 'odd'.....whereas this one is very natural looking. This wig was actually about another 6 inches long at the back, with large, very unnatural curls on it...I kept snipping and snipping until I felt it was how a child should look....and ended up this short!!!! I do think she looks younger now, so I doubt I'll go to all the effort of rerooting her!!

    1. Thanks so much Kendal, well you know me, I do like a challenge and can't stop trying new things.....or is it that I actually can't stop fiddling with things! LOL.....
I'm glad you like the after, I prefer it, but still not sure that this little girl is for me...I do prefer the Asian one better I think.

  5. .................fiddling has to be good if this is the result! Very pretty girl now, and I do think the fair hair suits her colouring better.

    1. Thanks Jude! I'm a fiddler, I admit it.....but really I should have been getting on with so many other things...but sometimes it just needs to be done!! I'm glad you like her new look.

    2. Thanks very much Nymphaea, glad you like her new look. And yes, she does still have the scent although it is slightly different from my new girl, it's mellowed a bit I guess!!

  7. Very nice change. You are amazing to take any doll and set about making them your own! I would never have even thought about changing eyes or hair on a basic style doll!
Shows you have a good eye for detail and a brave heart!!! lol

    1. Thanks so much Dee, I just like to 'do' stuff, if you know what I mean! I tend to get an idea and that's it....off I go to try it out. Sometimes it works well and other times it doesn't. I'm glad you think so on the detail and brave heart! LOL

    1. Thank you Lynn. It was actually a Leeke wig that I bought for my since adopted out Volks MSD, it was long with great big curls which really overwhelmed this girl, so they had to come off!!!!

  11. Well done!
I like how you photographed her. Interesting how the look changes even if you changed your position.
