Sandals and wigs.....

Yesterday I thought I'd try making some sandals for Devlin, my blond Gregor, as his feet were very hot in his sneakers.  I have bought some leather on Ebay but it's not arrived yet so in the meantime I thought I'd practice by making a pair with some fake leather that I had here already.  I'd hate to just cut into the proper leather with practice!!!!  Anyway, I made this brown pair by hand, only using my sewing machine for the row of topstitching along the upper edge of the sandals.  I used some thick real leather for the soles and the buckles were from a pair of my own sandals!!  Oh well, they weren't all that comfy anyway!

I'm quite pleased with how they've come out although they're far from perfect.  But they have given me an idea of where the pattern needs adjusting and where I can do better.  I can see that they gape a bit at the sides particularly on the inside, so I'll sort that out next time I make a pair.  I think I'll also use a piece of sandpaper to scuff the toes a bit, as boys often have scuffed toes, don't they!!  All in all I think they will do him a 'turn' for the summer months until he gets his lovely boots from Ruthsdolls!!!!

Apologies for the flash photos, they're taken inside my workroom!

After the shoes, I was just wondering about wigs and if the wigs I have here for my BJDs would fit Sasha dolls.  Of course I currently don't have anyone who needs a wig but as my brunette girl is losing her hair at a rate of knots, I thought I'd try a wig on Devlin, just to see the fit.  This is a very blond Monique Gold Roxie in size 8/9 which I've had a while and is currently being worn by my Volks SD10 Nana.  She has a big head so the wig has been stretched a bit and it fit quite well over Devlin's own lovely blond locks.

I think you'll agree that he looks very cute with this style, the wispiness really suits his little face!  But makes him look like a completely different boy!!

This is who the wig is normally worn by......I think she and Devlin both wear it well but in such different ways!!

  1. Is there no end to your talents!!! Making sandals now ! They look really good for a first effort , love that you 'stole' the buckles from your own shoes for them ..lol
and the photo of Devlin with his trouser rolled up hands in pockets looking at his new shoes is great! :)
And have you been reading my mind?? I was looking at some wigs on ebay for BJD dolls and wondered if they'd fit Sasha's and had been meaning to ask!!!! spooky !!!!

    1. Awww you are too kind Dee!!! I'm glad you like them though, they will hopefully be better next time I make some. LOL on my sandals, they were the ones I was going to wear to the 'do' last Saturday night and one strap snapped just as I was about to leave....so I thought 's*d it, I'll cut the buckles off!" Shame really because they weren't very old!
On the wigs, well you are better off with a stretchy cap because then you have a bit of 'give'. Leeke World wigs are lovely but I don't think they'd work as the wig cap is quite 'firm' and not much give to it. But I do have one here that I will try on Devlin.
If you email me the links to the wigs you're looking at, I might be able to tell from my 'wig' experience! I must have getting on for 100 wigs here (7 years worth of the darn things!), if not more, plus I've made lots using Tibetan lambswool, but only a small amount in Sasha size....I'm a hoarder of everything!!!
I'm also trying to find out if the wigs sold for Blythe dolls will fit Sasha. I don't have any but a friend of mine used to have one so I'm hoping she still has it and can try it on her Sasha. I will let you know, because there are some cute ones in that size too.
      Hugs Sharon x

  2. Sandals are superb! Adore Dev in the wig!! I think that is the problem with our Sasha boys...they look TOO well groomed!! Still, saying that I have never had the nerve to make a huge hole in the knee of a pair of DD trackie bottoms as they are so hard to get hold of in the first place...I have to hang on to the ones I have :)

    1. Aww thanks so much Ronny, glad you like them. They will hopefully get better though!
I know what you mean about the Gregors hair and looking well groomed. I used to want my son to look that neat and tidy when he was little.....it never happened!! I don't think I would want to tear a pair of DD trackies either to be honest. However, when I make jeans, I spend all that time making all the pockets, doing all the topstitching etc etc, then I spend the next couple of hours 'aging' them to within an inch of their lives! To the point that some of them do have holes, and people love them!!!! LOL

  3. Congratulations. Excellent first try at making the sandals.
Wish I had your creative talents which would hopefully stop me having to always put my hand into my purse (which never seems to hold enough!) everytime I need something 'Sashary!'

    1. Thanks so much Kendal, glad you like them. And thank you also for your sweet comment!
Well I have to say that it doesn't stop me from spending money as if it were going out of fashion! I wish it did! Because I have just ordered two pairs of sandals from JJ and 3 pairs of boots from Ruthsdolls!!! Ooops! Oh well, I will just have to keep sewing so that my kids have things to go with their new shoes. I have to say that despite really loving the clothing that is available to buy, I still would rather try and make something myself. It believe it is how I enjoy my dolly hobby, by doing my own things for them!!!

  4. Sharon, the sandals are great - I haven't yet ventured into making shoes for my Sasha's, though I have made ballet shoes and slippers for them, and did make a pair of leather boots for a small porcelain doll once (long time ago, using very thin skivers of church organ leather). I know what you mean about wanting to make them clothes to enjoy the hobby, that is largely how I enjoy my doll collection. I like dolls that look real and wear clothes well (ie have satisfying proportions) and love the challenge of creating clothes for them, though I also like to buy outfits if I really don't envisage making something similar myself.

    1. Thanks so much Anna, I had fun making them. If you do decide to have a go, try to get some sewing needles for leather as they make things so much easier, except of course they go 'nicely' through the skin on fingers too!!! And yes, the hobby is all about making things myself, for me. It's more or less how I started to enjoy dolls, I just wanted to sew something and it went from there. Some people like to dress and play with their dolls, others like to just display them, but for me it's all about trying to make things for them then taking photos of them!!! I think we all like doing things differently which makes for more fun, doesn't it!
Oh yes, I would definitely buy if I thought I couldn't do something myself, but I like to have a go first!!! Then when I see the disaster I've come up with, so I go looking elsewhere!! LOL

  5. Those are amazing sandals. I'm sure they'll be perfect next time.
Love the wispy wig on him. He's probably been out playing footie or some such. lol
You make the most perfect jeans for dolls! I go through fits and starts with sewing, actually with every hobby. LOL

    1. Thanks so much Lorrainne! He does seem pleased because he was wearing sneakers and his feet got awfully hot and cheesy! LOL. I do like this wig on him and it looked even better when I put it on properly, this was kind of rushed! But I don't think I'll be removing his lovely blond locks anytime soon!!

  7. great sandals sharon and youve inspired me with that wig it maybe perfect for my new model with the hole in her forehead, i looked through all the monique wigs but i must have overlooked that one so im off to see what colours they come in.....i was thinking of you today and wondering if you have very lethargic dogs, or are they used to the heat, my poor little king charles is not liking this heatwave at all, hes just lolloping about feeling sorry for himself and when we're out he would usually bark at every other male dog we pass but with the heat he just cant be bothered.....sarah xxx (in a scorching hot newquay)

    1. Thanks so much Sarah, glad you like the sandals, although they are far from perfect....I hope I'll be able to do better with practice.
Yes, the wig is really a nice one, a Roxie. Unfortunately it only comes in four colours I think, I get most of my wigs from Facets by Marcia as she doesn't charge the earth for postage. And she sends out straight away, I've had wigs arrive in as little as four days from the US!
It's funny you should say you were thinking of me, because I'd been thinking of you too!! And had just sent a link to your blog to a friend of mine in the US who really admires the outfits you make! I expect she will be another stalker to your blog now!
Oh your poor little dog! Well mine are used to it but all our floors are tiled so they tend to lay flat out on the tiles when they are too hot. Yoda, my black Chihuahua who has dodgy lungs, needs to not run about in the heat, but the two youngsters, Choco and Suki, run about like they always do....then Suki, being a long haired Chi, will flop on the floor with her legs in the air...she is a bit of a floozy!!! They get through a lot of water and sometimes not much food, but in the main, they are OK, thank goodness!!
I didn't realise you were in Newquay! Very nice, are you close to the beach?
      Big hugs Sharon xx

    2. sharon, i looked at the wigs but they dont come in brown, the colours are far too funky for my little girl and the pale blonde you have i dont think would suit, i have a pale blonde peggy sue but its totally wrong for her, she'll have to make do with her prince gregor for now ....thanks for sending your friend the link, im not sure when theyll next be clothes as esmes off school now for summer so dont know how much free time ill have, also i think the heats making my brain not be able to think properly to decide what to even make !.....yes we're quite close to the beach here, 10 min walk at the most to the nearest one, we're so lucky but esme doesnt think so as now shes 11, the beach is SO boring (lol)....im quite liking this sedated version of zach the dog, lets hope the sunshine continues ! xxxxxx
