FOR SALE

Flea Market Mannequins

When we were at a flea market recently, we saw these three mannequins for sale on one of the stalls.  They were all 'old' apparently and quite good condition.  The guy wanted about 70 euros for each one, trying to persuade me that they were 'antiques' and had 'real glass eyes'!  Whether they were antiques I don't know, but yes, they did appear to have glass eyes and rather dodgy wigs!  However it did get me thinking that it would be so much fun to have a room of child sized mannequins!  But no, I didn't bring any of them home with me!  I just thought I'd share the photos though, they were really quite interesting looking!!!

Thanks for visiting!

  1. you should have bought them !....i saw a pair for sale recently but i cant go there as a room full of dolls is one thing but adding life size mannequins is another , especially if anyone comes to visit they have to walk through the room to get to the garden ...bargain though at 70 euros ! :)

    1. LOL Brian would have divorced me I'm sure! It's bad enough having two largish Himstedt dolls, can you imagine these in the house? I'd probably freak myself out every time I walked into the room even though I'd know they were there! Yes, probably a great price for each of them.

  2. The top one has a vintage look, especially with the style of socks and shoes she's wearing. I'd put that one in the 70s at the latest.

    1. I thought that might be the case too, they look like little spats in a way, don't they!

  3. OMG, I know someone who would have snapped them up if she'd seen them!! My girlfriend has several mannequins already, dressed in bridesmaids costumes. :) Thanks for sharing the photos Sharon, it looks like it was a great flea market, I love those places. SIGH!!

    1. They're great, aren't they! They'd make a super talking point if you had them in your hallway for example! Or would the neighbours just think I'd gone completely nuts? Probably the latter!
It's not a bad flea market but this particular stall does have some great stuff...I have a feeling a lot of it comes from France and they might also be Frence guys too.

  4. Not sure they are something I'd like in my house but interesting to see. You'd need so much space to have them .The last one looks the sweetest although the second and bigger boy looks so realistic! Thanks for showing them to us, a very interesting market :)xx

    1. LOL could you just imagine!!!
I liked the third one too, I'd change her wig though, that one was either too small or just plain odd on her, and a bit too synthetic. She'd look better with something in mid brown with a more natural look to it.

  7. Although like Sarah I'm desperately short of space here I WOULD have been very tempted to buy the last one and MADE space for her somewhere! I so love unusual things.
Just imagine having one in your own home dressed in a Sasha Morgethaler Gingham dress. (Could even have asked Sharon to customise her glass eyes on the line of the early NPs!) What a talking point!

Off Topic as usual. Once when doing a topic at school on the Victorians I borrowed a couple of manniquins from Stoke-on-Trent Museum, dressed them accordingly and displayed one with a Dollytub, washboard, soap, clothe's horse and pegged-out line of washing in the entrance porch (Visitors had to literally duck under the old fashioned bloomers, petticoats etc!) ... and the other wearing a mop cap and apron in the corner of the stage baking on a wooden kitchen table surrounded by olden times cooking items and ingredients.

    1. I actually have quite a few childrens clothes here from when I had even bigger Himstedts, that would look great on one of these, but yes a gingham smock would look very sweet on that last girl ;)
I almost bought a one armed boy one once from the same stall....I wonder where they get them from!a
My brother's day centre has a couple of mannequins and they're very nice indeed, one of them is so sweet and handsome looking. They used them for their local history projects that they've been doing. I believe I showed a photo of one of theirs here on my blog in November 2014 after I came home from my visit to the UK.

  8. Wow, the mannequins are in fantastic condition for their age and are so interesting to see. I also struggle with space for the larger dolls and certainly would with mannequins so I have avoided that temptation on several occasions. But I love looking at them and admiring the art. Thank you for sharing Sharon, a great post! :) xxx

    1. I'm with you on that Ginger, I probably wouldn't ever buy one but I do enjoy looking at them and yes their condition is very good for their age. I am sure they'd be a lot of fun to have if I lived in a very large house, but as I don't, then they will have to go to someone else I'm afraid! xxx

  9. Missed another post almost. Looking, let alone posting on my own blog is close to impossible on a kindle. Maybe a mannequin is what I need to cope with sewing for!
These are lovely sculpts but a little pale for my taste. My memory of them as a child was that they were flesh coloured until the late 60s, not pale and interesting. That little girl would make an excellent candidate for the Sharon repaint treatment though.......(sorry Brian! I'm not REALLY encouraging Sharon here!)
I wish I could get to that flea marker, you find such great things.

(PS Did you get my last email 're Marlee, sent on Thursday? Have no idea how to make sure if I sent it or deleted it, kindle buttons are too tiny to be sure it wasn't deleted by mistake)

    1. Well at least you found it in the end Jenni, and I'm glad you visited :)
LOL Brian would have a sky blue pink fit I think, if I brought one of this size home, but having said that, when we were there he actually did say to me "which one are you going to go for?" but I just laughed...I didn't want to be tempted to be honest!
It is a good flea market but we've been a lot of times and found nothing!
No, I didn't get an email other than one more than a week ago I think.

  10. The 2. boy looks very interesting.
But I totally understand your thoughts.
(I never unterstand women filling every corner of their houses with that giant Himstedt-dolls.
I always thought I would be very shocked if meeting them at night on my way to the toilet.
In my eyes they're looking way too much like the personalised dream of real grandchildren and the expensive clothing should be weared by a lucky real child instead.
-Will you kill me writing this?)

But this boy seems to be a peace of art, worth to greet visitors in a hall of a big house (as you wrote before, I just noticed) ...

    1. LOL nooooo of course I won't kill you for writing that about the Himstedts! I have two smaller girls, I think the bigger one is about 82cm and the other 73cm, so not too big really. But yes people often dress them in such expensive clothes!! My girls have clothes that I bought at the flea market or in the sales and their shoes, which are lovely, were actually bought at a local market for 5 euros per pair as they were seconds!!
It never bothers me if people have different opinions of dolls to me, after all they are only dolls and everyone is entitled to their opinion, aren't they! I recently saw someone make a comment about someone's doll on Facebook and the owner of the doll really took offence, went running off to Flickr to complain, crying that someone had been 'mean' to her doll! Sorry but I had to laugh, I didn't realise that people took things like that so seriously! ;/
Yes, that boy would look great in the right setting for sure.

    2. I agree with Anne about coming across them on a dark night on the way to the toilet, I'd be sure to scream and give everyone a heart attack! lol
There are some strange people out there, who seem to have no life but their dolls and think more of them than of real children or husbands, sad I know but true. Fancy running off to 'cry' about a comment about your doll? They need to take a look at their life... :)xx
